NFL Week 1 Sunday & Monday Preview: Every Matchup, Every Edge, Every Prediction

The NFL season is already underway, but Sunday is when Week 1 truly explodes.

Thirteen games fill the Sunday schedule before Denver and Kansas City close the opening week on Monday Night Football. And if the first portion of Week 1 has reminded us of anything, it is that September football rarely follows the script. New coaches are unveiling systems nobody has seen in a meaningful game. New quarterbacks are taking over offenses. Injuries have already changed the complexion of multiple matchups.

For CrossTalk, the goal isn't simply to pick winners. We're looking for the specific matchup that can decide each game — the edge — and where the betting market may be overvaluing or undervaluing a team.

For reference, the betting numbers below use the Week 1 market available entering the weekend. Lines can and will move before kickoff. The Sept. 11 bet365 board had Jacksonville -8.5, Cincinnati -3.5, Baltimore -3.5, Pittsburgh -5.5, Buffalo -1.5, Detroit -6.5, Tennessee -1.5, Los Angeles Chargers -9.5, Minnesota -1.5, Las Vegas -3.5, Philadelphia -5.5, Dallas -2.5 and Kansas City -2.5.

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Bears -3 to -3.5 | Total: 47.5

This is much better than the typical Bears-Panthers matchup we've become accustomed to seeing. Both organizations enter 2026 believing they can contend, and the quarterback matchup between Caleb Williams and Bryce Young gives this game legitimate intrigue.

Chicago's advantage begins with its offensive ceiling. Williams took meaningful strides in Ben Johnson's offense last season, particularly when extending plays without turning every pressure situation into a sack. The Bears should again lean on motion, play action, D'Andre Swift and the tight-end combination of Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland. The concern is Rome Odunze, who enters Sunday questionable with a calf injury.

Carolina's best path is on the ground. Chicago's run defense was a significant weakness last season, which means Chuba Hubbard and the Panthers should test the interior before asking Young to win the game throwing into obvious passing situations. Carolina also upgraded its defense with players such as Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd, so Williams may not get the comfortable opening afternoon some expect.

The Edge: Chicago has more ways to create explosive offense, but Carolina's run game makes anything beyond Bears -3 uncomfortable.

CrossTalk Prediction: Bears 27, Panthers 23

CrossTalk Lean: Bears -3 or better. If the number is -3.5, the moneyline is preferable.

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Ravens -3.5 | Total: 47.5

This might be the most fascinating game of the early window.

Baltimore begins the Jesse Minter era with Lamar Jackson still providing the offense with a weekly matchup problem that cannot truly be replicated in practice. But there are questions. The Ravens rebuilt the interior of their offensive line, and immediately draw a Colts defensive front featuring DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart. Baltimore will also be without defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike.

Indianapolis is more dangerous than the market may initially suggest. Daniel Jones returns after the Colts' 2025 offense was one of football's best units before injuries derailed the season. Jonathan Taylor remains the engine, and Indianapolis now has enough perimeter talent to punish a defense that struggled in pass coverage last year. The Colts also have Sauce Gardner available to deal with Zay Flowers on the outside.

Baltimore still has the best player on the field in Jackson, and that matters late in close games. But asking a road favorite with a new coaching staff and reworked offensive line to win by four is considerably different from simply asking Baltimore to win.

The Edge: Indianapolis' defensive interior against Baltimore's reconstructed offensive line.

CrossTalk Prediction: Ravens 27, Colts 24

CrossTalk Lean: Colts +3.5. Baltimore survives, Indianapolis covers.

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Steelers -5.5 to -6 | Total: 41.5

The entire handicap changed during the week.

Atlanta expected Tua Tagovailoa to start. Instead, an oblique injury ruled him out, while Michael Penix Jr. is also unavailable as he continues returning from his knee injury. That leaves Cooper Rush starting against one of the NFL's more difficult defensive fronts.

Kevin Stefanski isn't likely to completely reinvent Atlanta's offense. The plan should be obvious: feed Bijan Robinson, manufacture easy completions for Rush and create opportunities for Drake London and Kyle Pitts off play action.

The problem is Pittsburgh knows exactly what is coming.

Mike McCarthy takes over a Steelers team that still possesses the personnel to make life miserable when opponents are forced into long-yardage situations. Aaron Rodgers doesn't need to look like his MVP version for Pittsburgh to control this game. If the Steelers avoid turnovers and consistently make Atlanta drive 70 or 80 yards with Rush, the Falcons eventually face a problem they may not be equipped to solve.

The Edge: Pittsburgh's pass rush against Atlanta's quarterback situation.

CrossTalk Prediction: Steelers 24, Falcons 13

CrossTalk Lean: Steelers -5.5. One of the better Week 1 edges.

Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Jaguars -8.5 | Total: 40.5

Jacksonville enters 2026 as the defending AFC South champion. Cleveland enters with considerably more uncertainty.

Deshaun Watson returns as the Browns' starter, but Cleveland could begin the season with five new offensive-line starters. That's a dangerous way to enter a road opener against Josh Hines-Allen and a Jaguars defense capable of destroying drives with pressure. Cleveland will also be without guard Teven Jenkins.

The Browns' defense looks different as well. Myles Garrett is gone, with Jared Verse now one of the central pieces of the new front. That means Trevor Lawrence has an opportunity to dictate this game rather than constantly reacting to one of football's premier pass rushers.

Jacksonville doesn't need Lawrence to throw 45 times. Establish the run, stay ahead of the chains and eventually force Watson to chase points. That's where this game can separate.

The Edge: Jacksonville's continuity and offensive ceiling against a Browns team undergoing major transition.

CrossTalk Prediction: Jaguars 27, Browns 13

CrossTalk Lean: Jaguars -8.5 and Under 40.5 both deserve consideration.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Bengals -3.5 | Total: 50.5

If you're looking for offense Sunday afternoon, start here.

Joe Burrow returns to an offense that still features Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Chase Brown. When that group is healthy, Cincinnati can score with anybody in football. The Bengals spent the offseason rebuilding the defensive front because the offense simply cannot be expected to score 30-plus every Sunday to compensate for defensive breakdowns.

Tampa Bay isn't coming into Cincinnati simply hoping to survive. Baker Mayfield has historically played Cincinnati well, and his Week 1 performances with Tampa have been excellent. Bucky Irving and Chris Godwin give the Buccaneers multiple ways to attack Cincinnati's rebuilt defense. Jalen McMillan, however, is doubtful with a knee issue.

This is one of those Week 1 matchups where offensive continuity may be ahead of defensive continuity. Cincinnati can win, but Tampa Bay is capable of forcing Burrow to keep scoring into the fourth quarter.

The Edge: Both quarterbacks against defenses with questions.

CrossTalk Prediction: Bengals 31, Buccaneers 27

CrossTalk Lean: Over 50.5 is more attractive than laying the points with Cincinnati.

New York Jets at Tennessee Titans — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Titans -1.5 | Total: 38.5

There are storylines everywhere.

Geno Smith will start for the Jets again for the first time in 3,612 days, while former Jets head coach Robert Saleh begins his Tennessee tenure against his old organization. Tennessee counters with second-year quarterback Cam Ward, who threw for 3,169 yards with 15 touchdowns and only seven interceptions as a rookie.

The matchup to watch is Tennessee defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons against New York's offensive line. Simmons produced 11 sacks last year and can wreck an offense before the route concepts even develop. The Jets believe their line is much more stable entering this season, but this is an immediate stress test.

New York's defense could create similar problems for Ward. The Titans' young quarterback was sacked 55 times as a rookie, and the Jets have enough speed coming off the edge to force Tennessee into a conservative plan.

This feels like field position, turnovers and one explosive play deciding the afternoon.

The Edge: Both defensive fronts.

CrossTalk Prediction: Titans 20, Jets 17

CrossTalk Lean: Under 38.5.

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Lions -6.5 | Total: 49.5

Don't automatically dismiss New Orleans here.

Tyler Shough finished his rookie season playing legitimate NFL quarterback, helping New Orleans win four of its final five games. The Saints' defense also improved significantly during the second half of 2025. This isn't necessarily the same team that started last season 1-8.

But Detroit remains an extremely difficult opening assignment.

Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown headline an offense that scored 481 points last season. Gibbs should carry an even larger role after David Montgomery's departure. If Detroit keeps Goff clean, New Orleans will have trouble preventing sustained drives.

The injury situation matters. Cameron Jordan is out for New Orleans and Alvin Kamara is questionable with a knee injury. That makes it harder for the Saints to control tempo and generate pressure without committing additional defenders.

Shough should make enough throws to keep New Orleans competitive for a while. Detroit's ability to finish drives becomes the separator.

The Edge: Detroit's offensive firepower and red-zone efficiency.

CrossTalk Prediction: Lions 30, Saints 23

CrossTalk Lean: Lions -6.5, though the Over may ultimately offer the cleaner angle.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans — 1:00 PM ET

Market: Bills -1.5 | Total: 44.5

This is the best game of the early Sunday window.

Buffalo is still chasing the breakthrough season of the Josh Allen era. Houston believes its defense can prevent it.

There is evidence supporting that confidence. Houston sacked Allen eight times in last season's meeting, and Buffalo has lost its last four trips to Houston. The Texans' defensive front can collapse pockets without constantly exposing the secondary through all-out pressure.

Buffalo's answer is obvious: don't turn every possession into Josh Allen playing superhero.

The Bills need quicker throws, a legitimate rushing presence and better protection from Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown. Houston faces a similar issue offensively, where an overhauled offensive line must keep C.J. Stroud clean against Buffalo's pass rush. Stroud remains the variable capable of transforming Houston from a good playoff team into an AFC championship contender.

This is close enough that getting points with the home team becomes important.

The Edge: Houston's defensive front plus home field.

CrossTalk Prediction: Texans 23, Bills 21

CrossTalk Lean: Texans +1.5 — outright upset potential.

THE 4:25 WINDOW

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers — 4:25 PM ET

Market: Chargers -9.5 | Total: 47.5

The largest Week 1 spread exists for a reason.

Arizona went 3-14 last season and begins a new era under Mike LaFleur. Kyler Murray is gone, meaning veteran Jacoby Brissett draws the assignment against a Chargers defense that finished among the league's best last season. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is also questionable with an ankle injury, while Arizona is already missing multiple defensive backs.

The much more interesting side is Los Angeles.

Mike McDaniel is now coordinating an offense led by Justin Herbert. That combination has enormous potential. McDaniel's ability to manufacture space and speed combined with Herbert's arm should create opportunities for Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Omarion Hampton that simply weren't consistently available before.

Jim Harbaugh's Chargers have won 11 games in consecutive seasons. Arizona is rebuilding. Los Angeles should dictate the opener.

The Edge: Justin Herbert plus Mike McDaniel against Arizona's depleted defense.

CrossTalk Prediction: Chargers 30, Cardinals 17

CrossTalk Lean: Chargers -9.5.

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings — 4:25 PM ET

Market: Vikings -1.5 | Total: 46.5

One of Sunday's most interesting line movements belongs to the NFC North.

Green Bay originally opened as a slight favorite before the market moved Minnesota through pick'em and eventually toward Vikings -1.5.

The reason for Minnesota optimism starts with Kyler Murray, who officially begins his Vikings career after winning the starting job over J.J. McCarthy. Murray now operates in Kevin O'Connell's offense with Justin Jefferson, giving Minnesota a quarterback-receiver combination with tremendous explosive potential.

Green Bay has an exploitable matchup of its own.

The Vikings were vulnerable to deep passes last season, while Jordan Love and Christian Watson produced some of Green Bay's best offensive football attacking vertically. Brian Flores' aggressive pressure packages create negative plays, but they also create one-on-one opportunities if Love identifies pressure correctly.

This game will likely swing on whether Minnesota's pressure reaches Love before Green Bay's vertical routes develop.

The Edge: Green Bay's deep passing attack against an aggressive Minnesota defense.

CrossTalk Prediction: Packers 27, Vikings 24

CrossTalk Lean: Packers +1.5 and Packers moneyline.

Miami Dolphins at Las Vegas Raiders — 4:25 PM ET

Market: Raiders -3 to -3.5 | Total: 40.5

Both organizations look dramatically different.

Miami enters a complete transition under head coach Jeff Hafley and quarterback Malik Willis. The Dolphins have moved on from Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and enter Week 1 with the league's youngest roster. De'Von Achane is now unquestionably the centerpiece of the offense.

Las Vegas is rebuilding too, but Kirk Cousins won the Week 1 starting job ahead of No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. The plan should revolve around Ashton Jeanty and a controlled passing game. Unfortunately for Vegas, Brock Bowers is out following a knee procedure, significantly reducing the offense's ceiling.

Miami can make this uncomfortable with Willis' legs and Achane's explosiveness. But asking such a young roster to win its first game together on the road is difficult.

The Edge: Las Vegas' running game and veteran quarterback experience.

CrossTalk Prediction: Raiders 23, Dolphins 17

CrossTalk Lean: Raiders -3 or better. Under 40.5 is also playable.

Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles — 4:25 PM ET

Market: Eagles -5.5 | Total: 44.5

Jayden Daniels gives Washington a chance against nearly anyone.

Philadelphia's job is making sure he never becomes comfortable.

The biggest mismatch is in the trenches. Washington enters the season without left tackle Laremy Tunsil, while Philadelphia can attack with waves along the defensive front. If Washington can't protect the edges, Daniels will spend too much of Sunday creating outside structure rather than operating within the offense.

Philadelphia is changing offensively as well. Sean Mannion takes over as coordinator and has emphasized an outside-zone foundation featuring Saquon Barkley, with Jalen Hurts operating more frequently from under center and working play action off the ground game.

That is precisely the approach Washington doesn't want to see. If Barkley consistently creates manageable second and third downs, Philadelphia controls the game and keeps Daniels standing on the sideline.

The Edge: Philadelphia's offensive and defensive lines.

CrossTalk Prediction: Eagles 27, Commanders 20

CrossTalk Lean: Eagles -5.5.

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants — 8:20 PM ET

Market: Cowboys -2.5 to -3 | Total: 48.5

Sunday ends with an NFC East game carrying far more intrigue than this matchup has had in recent seasons.

The John Harbaugh era begins in New York with Jaxson Dart entering Year 2. Dart accounted for 24 total touchdowns as a rookie — 15 passing and nine rushing — and now gets a new offense from Matt Nagy featuring more under-center formations, play action and physical personnel packages.

The major question is Malik Nabers.

Nabers is officially questionable as he continues working back from his significant knee injury. Current expectations point toward him playing a limited role, but his presence changes how Dallas must structure coverage.

Dallas still has the more established offensive attack. Dak Prescott throwing to CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens creates a difficult assignment for a Giants defense still installing a much more aggressive philosophy.

But New York's pass rush is the equalizer.

Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux have the ability to make Dallas' protection uncomfortable, particularly with the Cowboys dealing with offensive-line changes. If New York can affect Prescott with four rushers, this becomes a fourth-quarter game.

The Edge: Dallas at quarterback and wide receiver; New York in the pass rush.

CrossTalk Prediction: Cowboys 28, Giants 24

CrossTalk Lean: Cowboys -2.5. At -3, the edge becomes much smaller.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs — 8:15 PM ET

Market: Chiefs -2.5 | Total: 43.5

The NFL saved one of Week 1's most important games for last.

Patrick Mahomes returns.

Kansas City's franchise quarterback is expected to make his first regular-season appearance since suffering his major knee injury last December. That alone makes Arrowhead the center of the football world Monday night.

But this isn't the same AFC West we've watched for most of the Mahomes era.

Kansas City finished 6-11 in 2025, ending its nine-season reign atop the division. Denver took control of the West and enters 2026 returning 21 of 22 starters while adding even more speed to Bo Nix's offense. The Broncos also finished last season with one of football's best defenses and led the NFL in sacks.

Denver's pass rush versus Mahomes is the matchup.

Mahomes may be medically cleared, but escaping pressure after reconstructive knee surgery is different from standing comfortably in the pocket during practice. Kansas City will also be without offensive tackle Josh Simmons and defensive back Chamarri Conner. Chris Jones picked up a calf issue late in the week but is expected to play.

Bo Nix doesn't need to outduel Mahomes throw for throw. Denver needs Nix to protect the football, use the running game and capitalize when Kansas City gives him short fields.

Arrowhead and Andy Reid are major reasons Kansas City remains favored. But Denver may simply have the more complete roster entering Week 1.

The Edge: Denver's defensive front against a Chiefs offense bringing Mahomes back from major injury.

CrossTalk Prediction: Broncos 23, Chiefs 20

CrossTalk Lean: Broncos +2.5 with legitimate moneyline value.

CrossTalk's Week 1 Board

The strongest matchup edges heading into Sunday begin with Pittsburgh against an Atlanta team forced to start Cooper Rush, Jacksonville against Cleveland's rebuilt offense, Houston catching points at home against Buffalo, Green Bay getting points in what looks like a nearly even divisional game, and Denver catching 2.5 on Monday night.

For totals, Jets-Titans Under 38.5 stands out because both defensive fronts have opportunities to control the game, while Buccaneers-Bengals Over 50.5 represents the opposite philosophy: two experienced quarterbacks surrounded by high-end offensive talent against defenses that still have something to prove.

The upset watch starts in Houston and continues in Minnesota and Kansas City. The Texans, Packers and Broncos are the three underdogs CrossTalk sees with the clearest paths to winning outright.

Week 1 always comes with uncertainty. That's precisely what makes it so dangerous — and so much fun.

Football is officially back.
