CrossTalk Brief: Rangers Closing In on Eeli Tolvanen

The New York Rangers appear poised to add another piece to their revamped forward group, with multiple reports Tuesday evening linking them to free-agent winger Eeli Tolvanen.

PuckPedia first reported that New York was closing in on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, while Sportsnet subsequently reported that the Rangers and Tolvanen have agreed to the deal. As of this writing, the Rangers have not yet issued their own announcement, so the move should still be treated as reported rather than officially confirmed by the club. (Sportsnet.ca)

Tolvanen, 27, spent the past several seasons with the Seattle Kraken and recorded 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 78 games during the 2025-26 season. One year earlier, he scored a career-high 23 goals. The former first-round pick has accumulated 190 points in 423 NHL regular-season games between Nashville and Seattle. (NHL)

For the Rangers, this looks like another relatively low-risk attempt to inject more offense into a lineup that badly needed it. At only $1.5 million for one season, Tolvanen would give Mike Sullivan another legitimate middle-six option with a proven NHL shot, some physicality and the ability to produce secondary scoring.

The move would also continue Chris Drury's aggressive reshaping of a Rangers roster that finished last in the Eastern Conference last season. New York has already added significant new pieces around its core as it attempts to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoff picture in 2026-27. (NHL)

CrossTalk Take: At this price, there isn't much to dislike. Tolvanen doesn't need to become a star for this signing to work. If he can provide somewhere near his previous 20-goal level, give the Rangers another dangerous shooting option and strengthen the middle six, a one-year, $1.5 million commitment could become one of the better value bets of New York's offseason.
